Upon entry we were greeted by the very lovely owner, Deborah Swai, who led us to our seats and took our drink orders leaving us with the menu. So About Thyme is the only restaurant I’ve been to during Nairobi restaurant week that are serving the NRW menu exclusively, which I think is a smart move especially if your searching for consistency.
Onto the food; I started off with the baba ghanoush on toast and my friend had duck meat triangles (samosas). She thouroughly enjoyed her starter but honestly not more than me. My starter, though not very photogenic, was so many different kinds of yum. Levels my friends, levels. I was starving by the time I was done and about ready for my main. I ordered the butternut porcini in a cream sage sauce. OMG! Whatever was happening in my mouth, only the gods of sweet things can explain!! That was one hell of a meal and I cleared the plate in 5 seconds flat. I am notorious for not chewing food. Growing up, my aunties had to constantly tell me to slow down the eating process in order to get in a few chews. I have also been known to over eat. Like literally, past the point of fullness and straight to the point of purging. So here I was, doing it all over again. Childhood memories flashing before me. Not that I minded. It was well worth it, without the purging of course.
Anyway, back to present day, the sage sauce was the perfect compliment for the butternut. An extraordinary marriage. My friend had the fish which came with rice and though it seemed like an odd combination, it turned out to be quite the opposite. For dessert, I, as a pie person, ordered the frozen key lime (yes also for comparisons sake) and my friend, the bread and butter pudding. We did a half and half because we wanted to try both and were very pleased with both the hot and cold dish. The tangy flavors of the lime really came out with squinting-eye effects and the sweet, warm, feeling of home was brought forth in the bread and butter pudding.
A glass of wine and cocktail later, it was home time. An evening well spent. I give About Thyme 9/10
